Types of Nantucket Baskets

We make a variety of Nantucket baskets. Each one of them requires a lot of time and attention as well as using components that are made by skilled craftsman. We use cherry for rims, bases and handles that are created specifically for Nantucket baskets as well as the traditional cane for staves and weavers.

Once we have assembled the needed materials, the process of making the basket is a long one. First the staves must be cut from the cane, trimmed to fit the mold, and sanded. The staves then are put onto the mold in the right position and allowed to dry. This is probably the most important step as it forms the "bones" of the basket. Only after the staves have taken the right position and shape does the weaving begin. Fine fine cane is used for weavers. Depending on the size of the basket, the weaving can take many days.

Once the weaving is complete, it's time for the rim. A traditional Nantucket basket rim is made from half round reed which has to be shaved and formed to fit the basket.Once that's done, it is attached with small nails and then lashed onto the basket with a weaver.

The finish of a Nantucket basket is an important step. We use polyurethane and sand and apply at least 5 coats for a rich finish.
